Kirkley Mill, Lowestoft

Kirkley Mill, Lowestoft,

Modern sustainable health campus

The Kirkley Rise site was identified by NHS Great Yarmouth and Waveney as offering an ideal and affordable strategic location for health services south of the river in Lowestoft.

Chaplin Farrant have designed a 2600m2 health campus with options for flexible use, in a modern sustainable building.  The building's entrance creates a reference back in time to a windmill that was previously located on the site.

In addition to the substantial community, health and economic benefits provided under this scheme, the design solution will significantly enhance the local built environment and regerate the area, as well as provide a suitable infill for a derelict industrial site.

Grove Veterinary Practice

Grove Veterinary Practice,

Fakenham Extension and Refurbishment

The veterinary practice in Fakenham required a small first floor extension and the refurbishment of internal facilities.

The project involved the installation of two operating theatres, a prepartion area, an xray machine and an MRI scanner which were previously housed in a redundant area of the building.

The offices were also refurbished with a lift and staircase added to provide access to the first floor.

Drawing on Chaplin Farrant's NHS experience, the vet's practice now has a near NHS standard facilities, with lamina flow ventilation in the operating theatre, and clean and dirty routes through the area.

Greyfriar’s Lighthouse

Greyfriar’s Lighthouse,

Health Campus Design

The Greyfriar's site was identified by NHS Norfolk and Waveney as a site that would provide an ideal healthcare campus with its central location in Great Yarmouth and with access to large public parking facilities.

CF have designed the campus in several stages with the Lighthouse as the focal point.  The circular building provides a link between several buildings on the site and harbours a glass lift, with a circular staircase winding its way up to the maintenance level.  This also functions as an informal view of Great Yarmouth.

Other buildings included within the Lighthouse Project are a three storey building accommodating nine consultancy rooms and a building to house an emergency generator to support the whole campus.

Plowright Health Centre

Plowright Health Centre,

for Guildhouse / Mansell

This new build tow-storey Health Centre of approximately 8000ft² will relocate the existing Swaffham Plowright surgery to a greenfield site adjacent to the Swaffham Eco-Centre.

The orientation and design of the building reflects the importance of environmental sustainability, particularly in view of the location.

Much has been made of the south facing glazed entrance reception area which provides a welcoming two-storey atrium element. Materials are appropriate to the location of the existing site with features including large trees that have been incorporated into the layout.

This environmentally friendly centre has been nationally recognised as an exemplar project, winning a SHINE award for sustainable healthcare buildings.

St. Stephens Medical Centre

Cathedral Healthcare Norwich

The 2000 m² two-storey health centre at the old Norfolk & Norwich Hospital houses three existing practices that are joining forces to provide a new surgery and a dispensing pharmacy.

The building will house consulting rooms, teaching consulting room, minor operations, district nurses, health visitors and a range of other related services in this new purpose built facility.

It is envisaged that the Health Centre will provide a 'one-stop shop' for care in the community.
